Our mouths hung low and stiff. Blood and jealousy coursed through our ears. Some girls giggled with an unbridled giddiness. My 12 year-old peers Evan, Jon, Nick, and Jim were lip-syncing to Duran Duran.

How could Mrs. Winn remain so passionless in the face of such obvious talent? She just stood by, looking around, as if waiting for it to finish.
